Reconciliation through dialogue and joint activities in the local communities in BiH

Beginning with the support given to the students of the High Vocational School “Jajce”, during their publicly expressed demands for the survival of this multiethnic school in 2017, NDC Sarajevo continues engagement in that community. Now it focuses exclusively on students, teachers, and parents associated with that secondary school, along with elementary schools in Jajce, the Federation of BiH entity, and the neighbouring community of Jezero, a municipality in the Republika Srpska entity.

Building on a successful story of joint, trans-ethnic activities of students striving to preserve the multiethnic school, this project aims to maintain the established ones and set up new multiethnic and gender-balanced socially active networks within these groups. It thereby seeks to involve a larger number of participants in the process, and through a series of educational, social, cultural, sports and ecological activities, to strengthen inter-ethnic relations within and between communities.

Since 2017, when the project started, the number of schools and communities participating in the program in annual cycles has steadily increased. Thus, already in 2018, another secondary school from Jajce, along with secondary schools from Mrkonjić Grad, Republika Srpska entity joined the project. Two elementary schools from Mrkonjić Grad and a secondary school from Vareš, the Federation of BiH entity, have been involved in the process since 2019. The project currently includes five secondary and eight elementary schools from these communities, from both the Federation of BiH – two cantons – and the Republika Srpska entities, so that cooperation is being developed at inter-cantonal as well as inter-entity levels.

It is worth mentioning that the project enjoys support from mayors of the municipalities of Jajce and Jezero, and in the case of Jajce, close cooperation with the Hiking Club “Ćusine” has been developed.

The project is financially supported by the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
