Activities in the local community
In the first few years, from 2000 to 2006, by acting and exploring simultaneously at different levels (education, culture, activism, media) and across Bosnia and Herzegovina, we learned that acting in the local community has the greatest potential for substantial changes enabling the democratisation of a divided society in the long-term. Thus, having specialised in acting in the local community, NDC Sarajevo developed a specific Nansen Dialogue Approach (NDA). More details about this approach are available following this link.
In practical terms, this method involves dialogue training and dialogue sessions spawning social-political-cultural activities on different topics, such as interethnic relations, sensitive political and constitutional issues, gender and LGBT equality, ecological awareness, arts and sports, humanitarian activities, civic actions, etc. NDA was fully implemented from 2006 to 2015 in the local communities of Bratunac, Jajce, Srebrenica and Zvornik, while some of its elements have been applied since the NDC Sarajevo was founded in 2000, in more than 30 other communities throughout BiH.
Research activities
In parallel with the activities in local communities, NDC Sarajevo has conducted, independently or in partnership with other organisations and institutes, a series of social research projects focused on peacebuilding, dynamics of interethnic relations, security, youth, gender issues and dynamics between religion and politics. The purpose of these research projects was two-fold: on one hand, to deeply understand the context under which the action is taking place and thereby enhance the practice, and on the other, to describe these practices and to share knowledge with concerned parties.
Having identified a communication gap between academia and the community of practitioners in the field of peacebuilding, interethnic relations in particular, and a lack of academic institution specifically focused on this type of social research, NDC Sarajevo sets out to continue and expand its scientific research in this field, and in a wider domain of social and political issues. NDC Sarajevo is a field-oriented organisation, which has accumulated extensive empirical knowledge, gained considerable scientific-research experience, while its key team members and associates have been engaged in various academic endeavours. Having considered this, NDC Sarajevo intends to make use of this potential, on one hand to reduce this communication gap, and on the other to develop gradually and in the medium term a scientific-research institution to act as a repository of relevant knowledge, providing open access to scholars and practitioners all over the world.
